WITH THE CURATOR ON THE EMSCHER ART TRAIL

On Sundays, the Emschergenossenschaft regularly organizes guided bike tours along the Emscherkunstweg They are free of charge and designed by the Urbane Künste Ruhr team.

This coming Sunday, May 22, 2022, there will be a special kind of bike tour from 2 to 5 p.m.: Curator Marijke Lukowicz will accompany the approximately 20 km route. At Urbane Künste Ruhr, she is in charge of the now 21 works along the Emscher and is in close contact with the artists. She will provide the cyclists with a lot of additional information about the sculptures and monuments. During the bike tour, the curator explains how the artists have dealt with the history of the Ruhr region, as the works address the eventful history of the Emscher conversion and the Ruhr region in very different ways.

The guided bike tour starts on the grounds of the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex. The photo exhibition there, »Beyond Emscher« by the Emschergenossenschaft, offers an opportunity in advance to experience the impressive transformation of the former industrial river and its region. The tour ends at the Theater der Pflanzen in Bottrop’s Berne Park.

After starting at the Zeche Zollverein, »Monument for a forgotten future« is the first artwork of the tour.

Along the way, the art-interested participants encounter the rock formation »Monument for a forgotten future« by Olaf Nicolai, Douglas Gordon & Mogwai, they pass the 14-meter-high obelisk by Rita McBride and are greeted at the end of the tour by the installation »CATCH AS CATCH CAN« by Lawrence Weiner and Mischa Kuball in Bottrop’s Berne Park. The park offers an excellent opportunity to take a break, because here Piet Oudolf, together with the landscape architects Gross.Max, has created a wonderful place to linger – the Theater of Plants.

The tour leads from the Zollverein colliery to the BernePark in Bottrop and is about 20 km long.

And those who want to end the day can wait for Mischa Kuball’s light installation in the evening hours or spend the night right on site in one of the sleeping tubes created by Andreas Strauss from »dasparkhotel«.
For free participation with your own bike, registration is required until Thursday before the event via www.emscherkunstweg.de.

Further information about the tour and the conditions of participation will be sent by e-mail with the confirmation of participation at least two days before the date. The organizer of the public tours is the Emschergenossenschaft.
