BRUTOLOGY – AN ONLINE ROADMOVIE

At the invitation of the Emscherkunstweg – a cooperation between Urbane Künste Ruhr, Emschergenossenschaft and Regionalverband Ruhr – Montserrat Gardó Castillo and Petr Hastik are developing the piece “BRUTOLOGY”. In preparation for the site-specific performance, which is to be performed for the first time on the Emscherkunstweg in 2022, two online sessions will take place in December. The format is organised by Forum Freies Theater (FFT) Düsseldorf.

In the two online sessions, which will take place on 8 and 18 December at 8 p.m. on the Zoom platform, participants can expect a virtual car journey through brutalist spaces and landscapes of the Ruhr region. The guided journey becomes increasingly unusual until you find yourself in a kind of group hypnosis. The ghosts of the past, the remnants of the dreams of progress, expansion and social justice that once defined the concept of Brutalism, are called upon. On the one hand, the digital ‘road movie’ aims to open up new perceptions and meanings of Brutalist architectures and infrastructures. As a participatory online experience, “BRUTOLOGY. AN ONLINE ROADMOVIE” furthermore questions the linearity of streamed time, the private or intimate sphere and the frontality – of theatre, but also of zoom meetings.

In “BRUTOLOGY”, Montserrat Gardó Castillo and Petr Hastik conduct artistic research on Brutalism – an architectural movement that emerged from the 1950s onwards and is named after its defining material: raw concrete. Characterised by massive exposed concrete elements and mostly present in people’s minds as prefabricated buildings, the original vision of many Brutalist buildings was that of social housing. Gardó Castillo and Hastik explore the contradictions and questions of Brutalism in terms of social and aesthetic aspects.

The sessions will be held in English. Registration at tickets@fft-duesseldorf.de is required. The event is free of charge. The organiser is FFT Düsseldorf.

COOPERATION

The Emscherkunstweg is a cooperation between Urbane Künste Ruhr, Emschergenossenschaft and Regionalverband Ruhr under the patronage of Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen, Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The sculpture path emerged from the temporary exhibition format Emscherkunst, which has accompanied the Emscher conversion by the Emschergenossenschaft since 2010. Since 2018, the Emscher art trail has been reconceptualised and expanded as a permanent offering under the artistic direction of Britta Peters, Urbane Künste Ruhr.
