BRUTOLOGY – AN ONLINE ROADMOVIE

Montserrat Gardó Castillo and Petr Hastik are currently developing the piece »BRUTOLOGY« at the invitation of the Emscherkunstweg. In preparation for the site-specific performance, which will be staged for the first time on 3 September 2022 on the Emscherkunstweg in Dortmund-Huckarde, four virtual roadmovies will take place in April.

In the online sessions, scheduled for Friday, 15 and Saturday, 16 as well as Friday, 22 and Saturday, 23 April at 8 pm each, participants can expect a virtual car ride through brutalist spaces and landscapes. In »BRUTOLOGY. AN ONLINE ROADMOVIE«, Montserrat Gardó Castillo & Petr Hastik will explore the rich heritage of Brutalist architecture in the Czech Republic, Catalonia and the Ruhr region. The guided journey becomes increasingly unusual: in a kind of group hypnosis, the ghosts of the past are finally summoned, the remnants of the dreams of progress, expansion and social justice that once defined the concept of Brutalism.

The sessions will be held in English. Registration at brutology@emscherkunstweg.de is required. The event is free of charge. The organiser is Urbane Künste Ruhr.

In »BRUTOLOGY«, Montserrat Gardó Castillo and Petr Hastik conduct artistic research on Brutalism – an architectural movement that emerged from the 1950s onwards and is named after its defining material: raw concrete. Characterised by massive exposed concrete elements and mostly present in people’s minds as prefabricated buildings, the original vision of many Brutalist buildings was that of social housing. Gardó Castillo and Hastik examine the contradictions and questions of Brutalism in terms of social and aesthetic aspects.

The digital road movie aims to open up new perceptions and meanings of Brutalist architecture and infrastructure. As a participatory online experience, »BRUTOLOGY. AN ONLINE ROADMOVIE« also questions the linearity of streamed time, the private sphere and the frontality – of theatre, but also of a zoom meeting.

Further performances of »BRUTOLOGY« will take place in cooperation with the FFT Düsseldorf in September.

COOPERATION

The Emscherkunstweg is a cooperation between Urbane Künste Ruhr, Emschergenossenschaft and Regionalverband Ruhr under the patronage of Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen, Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. The sculpture path emerged from the temporary exhibition format Emscherkunst, which has accompanied the Emscher conversion by the Emschergenossenschaft since 2010. Since 2018, the Emscherkunstweg has been reconceptualised and expanded as a permanent offering under the artistic direction of Britta Peters, Urbane Künste Ruhr.
